About the Founder
Hanshi Alan Gibson, 9th Dan, is the founder of Sama Kickboxing and Head of the Sama Organisation. A key figure in British kickboxing since the late 1970s, Hanshi Gibson holds licenses as a fighter, coach, referee, and official through the Professional Karate Association (P.K.A.).
He has trained a World Champion, two European Champions, four British Champions, and an English Champion. He also served as an official coach for the Great Britain Kickboxing Team in Amsterdam and was chief referee at the British Heavyweight Championships in Newcastle.
Notably, Hanshi Gibson helped professionalize kickboxing in the UK by introducing a structured grading system, uniforms, and music into training—pioneering moves that shaped how the sport is taught today.
The History of Kickboxing
Kickboxing was created in early 1970s America by the P.K.A. as a full-contact evolution of karate. Initially, the sport lacked clear rules or weight divisions, but it quickly developed with the introduction of protective gear and standardized competition formats.
The first World Championships were held in Los Angeles in 1974. By the late ’70s, kickboxing had become a recognized ring sport, popularized by icons like Jeff Smith, Joe Lewis, and Bill “Superfoot” Wallace.
Kickboxing reached Europe in the mid-1970s, supported by the P.K.A. and WAKO, founded by George Brukner. Today, the sport continues to grow worldwide under numerous organizations.
